Here are the best middle grade (for ages 8-12) books of this year, as determined by Publishers Weekly, the "weekly news magazine focused on the international book publishing business."  PW is read by publishers, authors, bookstores, and librarians. The magazine reviews about 9,000 books (from picture books to adult non-fiction) each year. 

 Two of these books are on next year's Bluebonnet list.
